One Day in Gorgeous Geneva

The sad thing was that we only had a day in Geneva, as it was a stopover point on the way to our snowy mountain vacation in Zermatt. Still, we had to take the opportunity to discover and see as much as we could... it is such an absolutely gorgeous city.

Here's to exploring Geneva in one day...

Night walk in Geneva.

We arrived in Geneva at night. The bright lights along the lake as well as the Old Town were stunning; especially since it was almost Christmas. Walking without a map, we got a little lost in there... but I guess that's what traveling is all about isn't it? Finding interesting little corners around the little corners of the world. There were lots of antique shops and all sorts of cute little stuff displayed outside the shops and in the windows there.

The Old Town is dominated by the main street, Grand-Rue; and is situated on a hill. The streets were quite steep... so there was a little tough walking to do.

Brightly lighted Old Town.

We came upon a small restaurant situated just beside the cathedral, nestled amongst the shops atop a steep street. It is called Chez Ma Cousine and there was a queue outside! As far as I know, any restaurant with a queue might just be worth queuing up for. So we did.

Thank God it wasn't a long wait and we were finally seated in this really small and extremely cramped space. It was so cramped that my mum, my sis and I who sat in the inside against the wall, could not move at all! We had to squeeze our fat butts in! LOL

Service was quick and no-nonsense. If you're expecting a smile and small talk from the waitress, this place isn't for you. Since there was only 2 or 3 items on the menu, she took our order at the speed of lightning, maneuvered her way through the narrow gaps between the tables and chairs, and before we knew it, our food arrived. No frills, nothing fancy... even our cutlery was of different shapes and patterns.

Chez Ma Cousine is famous for their roast chicken and fries. It kinda reminds me of Kenny Rogers Roasters or Nandos without the sauce. Good, not fantastic... but I like roast chicken so I was happy. Price was good too. ♥

Yummy chicken goodness.

The next day, our flight was in the evening... so we had the morning and a little part of the afternoon to explore what Geneva has to offer. Second largest city in Switzerland, one of the most important UN international cooperation centers, one of the most expensive cities in the world and surrounded by not one, but two mountain chains, the Alps and the Jura.

Geneva is a compact little city, so we did most of our exploring on foot.

The Brunswick Monument at the Square du Mont-Blanc.

Our hotel was located on the northern side of the city, so we started the day walking along the Quai du Mont Blanc, admiring Europe's largest alpine lake... Lake Geneva. Calm and blue as far as the eye can see, backdropped by gorgeous snow-capped mountains. So serenely beautiful.

Queer and naked looking trees along the quay.
The northern banks of Lake Geneva.

We crossed the lake via the pedestrian bridge towards the southern side, where the Jardin Anglais Park is located. Created in 1855, it is a wonderful place to sit down with a nice warm cup of coffee and a cookie, admire the lake, people watch and take random photos. I love parks! ♥

We didn't want to rush, so we spent some time here. It was worth it.

Seagulls all in a line.
Best thing about parks, it's free.
Walking in a park along a lake in winter.

At 10am sharp, one of the most prominent symbols of Geneva, the beautiful Jet d'Eau fountain started to pump its 7 tonnes of water 140m into the air. We saw the water flying up sky high and it really is impossible to miss it from the lake's shores. Against the bright blue sky on such a clear day; it was absolutely stunning.

We only watched the fountain from a distance because it was a cold winter's morning. Apparently the surrounding half kilometer is usually soaked with water; and if you're adventurous enough and willing to get wet, there is a path leading up to the fountain. I guess that would be fantastic during the summer months.

The majestic Jet d'Eau fountain.
That was as near as I got.
Hai-yak!!!

Another notable symbol in the park is Geneva's most photographed clock, the Horloge Fleurie, or Flower Clock. It's been there since 1955 and has the world's longest second hand at 2.5m.

Honestly, a flower clock don't excite me much; I've seen too many in China and in theme parks around the world.

There you go, the flower clock.

Speaking of time, time to get lost again in Old Town. It's just as pretty in the day as it is at night. There are many important buildings and places of interest situated around the Old Town, but due to time constraint, we decided to forgo most of the attractions and admire the facade and architecture. The beautiful shuttered old buildings, cobblestone walkways, narrow and winding streets were enough to keep us in awe.

It's great to spend an hour or two just walking about and exploring the Old Town. I wished I had more time to step inside the Cathedrale de St-Pierre, instead of just looking at it from the outside. :(

The shops and cafes lining the main street.
Tall, grey-stoned houses with rectangular shuttered windows.
Even the leafless trees add to the quiet atmosphere.

We didn't know exactly where we were in Old Town, but this relaxed looking terrace cafe caught our eye. People were sitting down and chilling out under the sun, and the thought of a nice piece of chocolate cake and a cup of coffee topped with cream was just too much to resist.

A great way to end a great day!

Coffee time is the best time.
Daddy still feeds me. ♥

At the end of our visit, while crossing the bridge back to the north side of the lake where the train station is... we saw swans! Pretty white swans gliding across the lake.

Such pretty little creatures.

Of course, Geneva is such a beautiful city and a day was definitely not enough to see what the city has to offer. Unfortunately for us, that was all that we had so we made the best of our time there. We just walked and walked and walked!

Snowy Zermatt and the Matterhorn

This post is long overdue, but I thought I'd write it anyway because Zermatt is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

It was winter 2012. I was in Europe for 3 weeks, and I wanted to see snow. Thick snow that I can jump into and play with; throw snowballs, make snow angels.

So when I was put in charge by my family to choose a destination to travel to, I chose one that I was 100% sure to experience all that. From that huge map of Europe, I picked Zermatt. A pretty village tucked deep in the Swiss Alps and home to the mesmerizing Mount Matterhorn.

The journey begins.

Zermatt is a car-free village, so the best way to get there is by train. Upon arriving at Geneva airport, we took the 4-hour train ride through beautiful Swiss scenery with snow-capped mountains in the background. I loved how the landscape of green slowly turned to white as we journeyed higher and deeper into the Alps.

It's a long ride from Geneva to Zermatt.

We did a short stop and train transfer at Visp; and by the time we arrived at Zermatt, it was already dark. We were lucky that our hotel was only about 5 minutes from the train station; so it was just a short walk through the snow covered pavement with our luggages. I wasn't complaining though, walking on snow for the first time was simply... joy. ^^

Arriving in Zermatt!

First things first, MAKAN time! After travelling for almost 7 hours, we were famished and ready to have a good Swiss dinner. After looking through TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet for some tips; we decided on Restaurant Stadel, just a walk down from where we were staying.

I wanted to get my hands on some cheese fondue. A friend told me that it's the best thing on a cold winter's night. It is; but at the end of the meal, I think I had a little too much cheese for my liking.

Oh, and we also had rosti; OMG to die for. I love rosti! *slurp* ♥

Time to dig in!
Delicious food food food! See the rosti? How can you resist?
A pot full of cheese.

We stayed at Testa Grigia Hotel. The hotel is rated 3-stars with the basic amenities, but it has 5-star views and costs RM600-700 a night. Pretty pricey. Zermatt is said to be one of the most expensive places in one of the most expensive countries in Europe.

But honestly, to wake up to such beauty just outside my room... it was worth it.

Morning view from my balcony.
I am in paradise. *lovessss*

I couldn't wait to go out! Walk on snow, touch snow, smell snow, play with snow... ^^

Our destination for the day was up the mountains. The walk to the base of the mountain was so beautiful; I couldn't stop clicking away on my camera. Every turn was a different picture and I wanted to capture everything and never forget anything.

A walk in the snow.
Look at the scenery. I'm a happy girl.
Loving the view of the river. Isn't it gorgeous?
Say hello to the Matterhorn.

There are a couple of peaks around Zermatt that provide beautiful views of the Matterhorn. We chose the 'Matterhorn Glacier Paradise' because it was the peak nearest to the Matterhorn and it was a good day that day; no mist obstructions!

We took the cable car ride to the halfway point at Trockener Steg and changed to the aerial tramway, cramped up together with skiers who were preparing to head down the mountain. Looking at them, I wanted to challenge the mountain too. It's a pity I can't ski. One day, when I gather enough courage, time and money; I will learn. ^^

Up, up and away!

The view from the top was more breathtaking than I could have ever imagined. I couldn't stop looking and admiring the sea of white foam that goes on and on and on. It was really cold though, about -10 degrees so I couldn't stay out for very long.

I would go out, play with snow and then run in... go out, play with snow and then run in again. ^^

Surrounded by mountains of white.
You bring out the kid in me.

My parents and little brother had slight altitude sickness; other than being cold, they were feeling giddy as well... that's cause we were more than 3,000m above sea level where the air is much thinner. They mainly stayed indoors in the cafe and kept warm with a cuppa coffee. I needed one too.

A cuppa to keep me warm.

The highlight of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is it's observation deck.

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is actually atop the Klein Matterhorn, which is the second highest peak of the Zermatt-Cervinia ski area. That's why it has got the best view of the Matterhorn, and the observation deck here showcases it in all its glory.

Brave the cold and the wind for a 360 degrees view that you will never forget. ♥

I'm at the peak of the Klein Matterhorn.
Wondrous view of the Matterhorn.

I finally got my perfect view of the Matterhorn. Standing at 4,478m, it is the emblem of the Swiss Alps and one of the deadliest peaks in the world. And there I was looking at it from afar (I'm never gonna climb it, no way)... so it's another tick of that bucket list! :)

A sea of snowy white... everywhere I turn.

At the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise; for an extra fee we get to enter the Ice Palace. It is said to be the highest glacier palace in the world, with an ice tunnel carved out about 15 metres below the surface of the glacier. There were also a few ice sculptures as well as a huge ice slide for us to slide down! No one was around so I got to go on it a couple of times. It was fun!

Other than that ice slide, there was not much to see here... unless you gawk at ice art pieces (not many anyway), I don't think it's worth the money.

Pretty ice carvings.
I've got a block of ice!

We spent a little more than half a day at the top of the mountain. We stayed as long as we could. Most people ski down, but we took the same way back... via aerial tramway and cable car.

Back down to the village.
More snow and ice. Will you drop on me?

That night, it snowed. It was heavy and it gave a misty air to the village. It left rooftops looking like it was covered with white icing and our balcony floor was covered with snow. It was so thick that we made a baby snowman on the balcony!

It's snowing! Weeeeeee!!!
I'll never get tired of this. Lalalala!

Everyone was craving some curry for dinner. It might have been because it was so cold, we wanted something spicy! The Pipe, a modern Afro-Indian fusion restaurant offered just that. We ordered the Cape Malay Curry with Springbok, Chakra Chicken with Curried Mustard Sauce and Massaman Prawn Curry. All served with fragrant rice.

We had a good dinner and the curry was not bad... of course, nothing can compare to what we have back home!

Some spices on a snowy night.

Last day in Zermatt! After a night of heavy snow; the next morning, everywhere was covered in white and there were lots of icicles dangling from the edges of the roofs. Really sharp icicles, and as pretty a sight it may be... it's really dangerous.

While taking our final morning walk around the village, there was an incident where a whole slab of snow fell down from the rooftops! The first time nearly hit us, and we saw it falling 3 more times. After that, we were constantly keeping an eye out for thick snow and icicles and avoiding them as much as we could. So scary!!

Icicles in the morning.
The village that is Zermatt.
One more view of the Matterhorn.
A scene I will never forget.
Snow, glorious snow. Can I bring you home please?

I was really sad to leave Zermatt. Only 2 days and 2 nights were not enough! It was such a great experience witnessing the beauty of  the snow-capped mountains and tumbling freely in the snow. Don't think I'll be back again, too many other places to explore... but thanks to Zermatt, I know I'll look forward to more snow-filled holidays.

I'll frolic in the snow one more time...

We took the noon train from Zermatt back to Geneva, and this time round we were able to see the beautiful snow covered valleys, ravines and small villages dotting the Alps as we zoomed pass (when we came, it was too dark to see anything). Every passing scenery was as breathtaking as the other. I was looking out of the window the entire journey.

Leaving the snow covered mountains of Zermatt.
The yellow and orange sky... like a painting.

As the sun set, we arrived in the proud city of Geneva... and that will be another travel story for another day. ^^
